At least 46 people including 37 children died in drownings during a Hindu festival in eastern India on Thursday.
The victims died in various incidents across Bihar state while taking ritual baths in rivers and ponds which had overflowed due to heavy flooding, said a DMD official.
“Despite the water levels being high in rivers and ponds people still took the festival baths,” said the official who didn’t want to be named as he was not authorized to talk to the media.
The drownings took place over Tuesday and Wednesday in 15 districts of Bihar as people observed Jitiya Parv festival, a Hindu tradition where mothers pray for the health and well being of their children.
Three more bodies are yet to be recovered, he added.
