Pastor Abel Damina of Abel Damina Ministries and Power City International has raised eyebrows with his unique take on the biblical account of Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden. In his New Year’s Eve message, Pastor Damina challenged the popular view that their sin was eating the forbidden fruit.
He said, “Adam and Eve didn’t eat anything. Were you there? No, you were not. So how do we know what really happened? Jesus was there. Can Jesus explain it to us? Yes.”
Citing Mark 7:18-21, Pastor Damina said sin is not what you consume. He said, “If Adam and Eve had eaten something, that alone wouldn’t have made them sinners. Sin isn’t about what you eat or drink. It’s deeper than that.”
Pastor Damina also debunked the myths about actions like smoking and drinking. He said, “Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol are not sins. I’ve said before, alcohol is not a sin. Smoking isn’t a sin either. If you like, publish that in the newspapers.”
But he was quick to add he’s not promoting those habits. “Am I encouraging smoking? No. You should have sense enough to know it’s bad for your health. Smoking can cut short your life,” he said.
Similarly, he said of alcohol consumption. “Am I promoting alcohol? No. But you should be wise enough to know the consequences. Alcohol can make you lose control, embarrass yourself or put you in trouble,” he said.
Pastor Damina said sin comes not from external actions but from internal thoughts and desires. “If Adam and Eve had eaten something, it would just pass through their digestive system and come out. That wouldn’t defile them,” he said.
He explained further, “Nothing you consume goes into your heart—it’s processed and eliminated by the body. True corruption is from within. It’s what you think and what’s in your heart that defines your spiritual state, not what you eat or drink.”
By redefining the story, Pastor Damina is saying we need to be self aware and introspective not ritualistic.
Pastor Damina’s message challenges us to rethink our traditional teachings and focus on spiritual growth. His views may be unconventional but it makes us dig deeper into our faith and the role of our heart in our actions.
