Senate President Godswill Akpabio has spoken on his experience at Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s wedding.
He said he spent the night at the Dangote Cement factory in Obajana, Kogi State on the wedding day.
According to him, he had to do so because of the poor state of the Kogi airport lights.
Akpabio, a former Minister of the Niger Delta, made the disclosure during plenary on Thursday at the National Assembly.
He said he is friends with Natasha’s husband. His presence at the wedding was a clear indication of his close relationship with the family.
According to him, his decision was forced by circumstances at the airport.
This has generated a lot of debate about the challenges that can arise even in high profile events.
Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reported that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions has recommended six months suspension for the Kogi lawmaker.
The committee said the Senator representing Kogi Central must write a letter of apology to the Senate for what was considered a gross disrespect to the authority of the Senate.
They also ruled that her salary and security details should be terminated.
Furthermore, she should not be seen around the National Assembly during the period.
The Senate adopted the resolution and the Senate President announced the suspension of the Kogi lawmaker.
This is part of the measures to maintain order and accountability in the legislative arm of government.
Historical data shows that disciplinary actions are common in parliamentary systems although the specifics vary from country to country.
For instance, similar incidents have led to quick actions in other legislative bodies where decorum and adherence to rules are strictly enforced.
This shows the unpredictable nature of politics in Nigeria and the need to maintain high ethical standards in government institutions.
