Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi State has reversed its previous prohibition on gas cylinder usage in student hostels, introducing revised safety protocols to balance convenience and risk mitigation.
Professor Sa’id Umar, Dean of Students’ Affairs, confirmed the update during an orientation event for new students, emphasizing collaboration between the university’s administration and the Students’ Union Government to refine the guidelines.
Under the new policy, only 3kg gas cylinders – a standard adopted by peer institutions – are permitted.
Larger cylinders will be confiscated to minimize fire hazards.
Fire Safety Measures
Assistant Superintendent Umar Lawal of the Federal Fire Service highlighted fire prevention as a critical priority. Citing institutional data, he noted that 90% of hostel fires stem from carelessness, electrical overloads, or improper gas cylinder use.
“Every electrical circuit has a capacity limit,” Lawal explained. “Overloading outlets with multiple devices can cause overheating, sparking fires.”
He urged students to purchase gas cylinders exclusively from dealers approved by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), ensuring compliance with national safety standards.
Community Response
In addition to fire safety reforms, Deputy Dean Dr. Aisha Alhassan announced upcoming sanitation initiatives to promote cleanliness in residential halls.
“Hostels are your home away from home,” she stated, encouraging students to proactively maintain tidy living spaces.
While specifics of the program remain under development, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to foster collective responsibility and hygiene awareness.
Support
Former university spokesperson Dr. Andee Iheme reinforced the importance of academic discipline during his keynote address, ‘Don’t Lose Focus’.
He advised students to adhere strictly to campus regulations and utilize official channels – such as academic advisors and the Students’ Affairs office – for guidance.
“Your choices today shape your future,” he remarked, underscoring the link between accountability and success.
ATBU’s updated policies reflect a commitment to student welfare without compromising safety.
By integrating practical fire protocols, community-driven sanitation efforts, and academic support frameworks, the institution aims to create a secure and productive environment.
These measures, backed by expertise from the Federal Fire Service and DPR, reinforce ATBU’s role as a leader in student-centric governance.
