A state of confusion erupted on Friday when the new tank farm of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), formerly called OVH at Kayode Street, Marine Beach Apapa went up in flames.
One eyewitness, Mr. Tunde Are said it started around 11 am resulting into mass panic as people tried to put out the fire before the arrival of rescue teams.
At 1 pm, coordinated efforts to rescue affected persons were put in place by Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) who were feverishly extinguishing the inferno.
It is understood that within the terminals bounds petroleum products leakage caused this explosion.
The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Mrs. Margaret Adeseye confirmed that several emergency services are involved in a joint operation with oil and gas sector addressing the problem currently under way.
Mrs. Adeseye told Nigerians: “Our emergency operations will not allow further spread of the inferno.”
