The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has closed down a Chinese supermarket situated within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja for alleged exclusionary behavior towards Nigerians.
On Monday, Nigerian personnel at the firm were questioned by FCCPC officials who then sealed off the place.
During search operations, workers disclosed that their boss had left.
When FCCPC agents arrived on the scene, many of them who are Nigerians revealed this same information on that very day.
Surveillance footage showed that Cindy Liu Bei fled with her family members on Monday morning at 8:26 am as per the employees of the supermarket which was owned by a Chinese woman.
Therefore, it led to a situation where FCCPC stepped in and closed down the supermarket.
However, it was exclusively revealed by The PUNCH before then that there had been a controversial policy enacted in this supermarket whereby only Chinese were allowed access thereby generating an uproar on social media platforms against this type of discrimination.
Nevertheless, on Monday, when FCCPC officials by Boladale Adeyinka, who is the Director of Surveillance and Investigation, visited the site, they said that their activity was a response to a viral video that depicted an alleged discrimination against Nigerians at Abuja supermarket.
According to Adeyinka, the supermarket owner had fled with her family on the day of operation as captured by CCTV footage.
Adeyinka added: “Today’s surveillance and investigation are aimed at proving these claims in the video.
“The supermarket behind me was sealed externally and padlocked upon our arrival today; this implies it was operational this morning with people entering and exiting it.
“Two vehicles left this morning supposedly taking away the proprietor of this facility whose name we now know as well as her contacts from our findings through CCTV cameras.”
Adeyinka, thus, ordered that the owner should come before the FCCPC tribunal, if not his establishment would stay closed.
‘Given that the owner is absent and then the premises are locked up, we are issuing a notice for her to appear at Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission latest by Wednesday.
“If she will ignore this call, then we shall apply some kind of regulatory measures. Once inside, one has to accept a summons as a condition for entering because that is the only way,’ said Adeyinka.
According to Adeyinka, if this legal inquiry summons is disregarded by her it means that FCCPC can keep the premises sealed until she complies with presentation before it.
Therefore, Supermarket closure has been enforced by FCCPC.
