A Lagos State court has discharged and acquitted Femi Fani-Kayode, the former Minister of Aviation, on all 12 forgery charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe delivered the verdict on Tuesday and held that the prosecution failed to link Fani-Kayode to the alleged offences.
The case started December 2021 when the EFCC accused Fani-Kayode of Doctoring a medical report to avoid court and claimed he employed the services of one Ogieva Oziegbe to do the job.
He presented the document before a Federal High Court in Ikoyi.
Fani-Kayode had maintained his innocence all through the trial and entered a no-case submission after the EFCC had called its witnesses.
In her ruling, Justice Abike-Fadipe said the prosecution had not provided sufficient evidence to prove its case.
“I have gone through the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses and I don’t see where the defendant committed the offences as alleged,” she said.
She also held that the EFCC had not made a strong case for Fani-Kayode to defend himself.
With that, the court discharged and acquitted the former minister. Case closed.
