A domestic violence case has hit Enugu State as Sunday Echeji is facing trial for brutalizing his wife and cutting off her hand.
The case was heard at Chief Magistrate Court 1 Enugu where Echeji was arraigned.
The court sitting on Friday January 31, 2025 had Echeji charged with attempted murder under Section 275 (a) of the Criminal Code CAP 30 Vol. 1 of the Revised Laws of Enugu State 2024.
The magistrate ruled that the case should be transferred to the State Department of Public Prosecution, saying the court has no jurisdiction to hear such a case.
The incident occurred in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area (The Punch).
The brutality of the case has sent shock waves through the community and has also heightened calls for tougher measures against domestic violence.
After the court’s ruling, Echeji was remanded at Enugu State Correctional Centre to await trial at the state High Court.
The Office of the First Lady of Enugu State led by Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah released a statement on Saturday condemning the attack.
Mrs. Mbah said the government is taking the case very seriously and restated its position against gender based violence.
She said such brutality will not be tolerated under this administration and vowed that justice will be served.
She said: “This kind of violence will not be tolerated in our state. Rest assured we will serve justice. So think twice before you ever think of committing such a barbaric or inhuman act or any form of violence because with this administration you will face justice.”
Enugu State Government said it’s committed to combating violence against women and girls by strengthening legal frameworks, supporting survivors and partnering with civil society organizations.
Law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups have also been working to ensure that perpetrators face the full weight of the law and set a precedent for the protection of the vulnerable.
The case has brought to the fore the issue of domestic violence and the need for stricter enforcement of laws that protect women.
As the case goes on, we wait to see what the judiciary will say that such brutality has no room in our society.
