First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, spoke of the beautiful landscape of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State when she was a student, and lamented the decline of the natural beauty.
She said work should start immediately to restore the campus to its former green glory which has been lost over the years.
She spoke on Thursday at the inauguration of 2.7km “Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way”, a grand pavilion and a monument on the OAU campus all donated by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi in her honour.
The First Lady attributed the decline of the campus to poor maintenance and announced a N1 billion donation to revamp the university’s horticultural landscape.
“I will donate N1 billion to restore OAU’s horticultural beauty. The campus was beautiful when I was a student here. Ife needs help to get back to its former glory,” she said.
She thanked the Ooni for the projects in her name and said the event coincided with Oba Ogunwusi’s 50th birthday.
Earlier, Oba Ogunwusi said the projects were named after the First Lady for her humanity. He listed her sterling leadership and dedication to education, women empowerment and national unity.
“A golden statue now stands in her honour to represent her as a teacher, mother and wife right in the heart of OAU. A modern hostel and a dynamic pavilion represents her progressive spirit. A 2.7km road now called ‘Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way’ represents the opportunities she has opened for the youth, women and the underprivileged in society,” he said.
He was represented by Deputy Governor. Kola Adewusi. []).endofpromise]
