Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has once again asked Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Tinubu as he works to fix the economy and make life better for every region and ethnic group in the country.
At his Constituency Briefing and Empowerment event in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio said Nigeria’s economy was in a mess when Tinubu took over in 2023. But he believes the president will get it right.
Nigeria under Tinubu
Akpabio described the situation Tinubu met as being on “life support”. He said:
> “President Tinubu met a very bad situation on the ground. Nobody envied him but he is determined to change the situation. Let’s encourage him. We believe he will take us to our El Dorado soon.”
The Senate President also recalled a personal conversation with Tinubu:
> “I asked him, ‘Mr. President, after becoming president and seeing the state of the economy Emefiele left behind, are you excited?’ He replied, ‘I will change the situation’”
Tinubu’s Regional Initiatives and Development
Akpabio praised Tinubu for launching many regional development initiatives including community empowerment projects.
He mentioned the establishment of South East Development Commission and other regional commissions to address specific needs like poor road infrastructure and ecological challenges.
“The president has shown love to the South East by signing the South East Development Commission into law and allocating key ministries based on needs not votes”, Akpabio said.
He noted that Ministry of Works and other key portfolios were given to the South East, a sign of Tinubu’s all inclusive leadership.
Support for Akwa Ibom and Unity
Akpabio also thanked Tinubu for supporting Akwa Ibom State.
He mentioned the president’s recognition of the state’s natural resources like gas and praised him for allowing Akwa Ibom to produce the Senate President, the first time since 1979.
Empowerment and Appreciation to Constituents
As part of his constituency empowerment, Akpabio gave out:
Bags of rice
Fleets of cars
Generating sets
Deep freezers
Tractors, tricycle vans and mini-buses
Motorcycles and sewing machines
Makeup kits
₦200,000 to 2,000 undergraduates
Akpabio said these were given to the people as a token of appreciation for their votes and loyalty.
Prayer for Governor Umo
The Senate President thanked Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno for the peace. He said the governor is a unifying leader and peaceful, citing his Christmas gift of 1,000 bags of rice to APC members.I
In response, Akpabio said he will send 1,500 bags of rice to PDP members.
“Without peace there is no development. Governor Eno has brought all Akwa Ibom people together, regardless of party.”
Beneficiaries
Akpabio told beneficiaries to make good use of the items:
“We are covering all local governments. Use your items well to better your life and community.”
This is Akpabio’s way of ensuring that empowerment reaches all corners of his constituency and development and unity.
