Gospel singer Timileyin Ajayi has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Sevocd Corps (NYSC) member.
The sad incident happened at Ajayi’s house few weeks ago and has generated outrage and calls for justice.
Nasarawa State Police Command arrested Ajayi on January 12, 2025 and charged him with culpable homicide which is punishable by death in Nigeria.
He was arraigned before Justice Simeon Aboki at Court 2 in Lafia on Monday and pleaded not guilty.
Stanley Nwaforagu, Officer-in-Charge of Legal at Nasarawa State Police Command said the police will ensure justice is served.
He spoke to journalists after the court session and said the prosecution has a strong case and will go all the way.
He said, “Today 27th January 2025, Mr. Timileyin Ajayi was arraigned on one count of culpable homicide punishable by death. His plea was taken and he pleaded not guilty. Case adjourned to 17th to 20th March.”
Nwaforagu also said the court will fast track the case and described the decision to do so as a good development.
“We have enough evidence to back this charge and we will win,” he added.
On the other hand, the defense counsel, Joseph Tukur told his client he will be with him throughout the process. He spoke to journalists and said his job is to make sure the prosecution proves the case beyond reasonable doubt.
“Today is just for arraignment,” Tukur said. “My client has taken his plea and a date has been fixed for trial. Now it’s the prosecution’s turn to prove their case. My job as a defense counsel is to see that due process is followed.”
The case has generated a lot of reactions especially with the previous statements made by the defendant. But Tukur said his job is to defend Ajayi within the law.
As the date draws near, the case shows that a fair and open judicial process is key to resolving such matters. It also serves as a reminder that we need to address the issues corps members face during their service year.
March is around the corner and Nigerians will be watching to see how the case unfolds and hope for justice for all.
