.Idris Okuneye, a well-known crossdresser better known as Bobrisky, on Friday, identified himself as a man at the Federal High Court in Lagos State.
For this act of mutilating the national currency, Justice Abimbola Awogboro sentenced Bobrisky to 6 months imprisonment without an option of fine.
Before giving her verdict, justice queried him whether he is a male or female and he responded saying that he is a man.
“Is your gender identity male or female?” Justice Awogboro asked Bobrisky. He replied, “I am male.”
Therefore, the judge stressed that this determination should be taken as warning to others who may attempt defacing national money with impunity.
The judge said his jail term would start on March 24th, 2024 which was also the date of his arrest
Bobrisky pleaded guilty to currency defacement charge pressed against him by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 5 before being convicted later on by the court
On Tuesday April 9th 2024 however, it was rescheduled for sentencing by the magistrate.
However, this date became a public holiday because of Eid-el-Fitr celebration according to the government.
Bobrisky, having been convicted the previous Friday prayed the court for a kind sentence stating his unawareness of the law on defacing currency.
While speaking in mitigation he pleaded before court, stating that he was not aware about any law concerning money defacement.
He stated that he is a social media influencer with over five million followers.
However, the judge informed him that being ignorant about the law is not a valid defense.
“I accept that my Lord. I pray earnestly to be given a second chance to use my influence to enlighten my audience on money management and its accountability.
“I am thinking about making a video for viewers of my channel who want to know more about appropriate behavior as far as handling money is concerned.
“My lord this will never happen again I deeply regret it lord.”
