Monday joint security forces conducted a sting operation at Pantakers Market in Dei Dei, Abuja and recovered several stolen manhole covers.
The operation was based on intelligence report that the market was a hotbed of stolen items.
The operation led by FCT security team started at Dei Dei Saburi before moving to Pantakers Market. Lere Olayinka, Special Assistant on Media to the FCT Minister shared the raid in a video on his X handle.
“FCT – Security Men raided Pantakers Market, Dei Dei, Abuja in search of stolen Sewage Manhole Covers. What they found will shock you! Why are we this evil in this country like this?” Olayinka asked.
On getting to the market, the security team divided into groups to search the area. Shop owners were asked to open their shops so the team can search for stolen items.
During the search, several heavy manhole covers stolen from different parts of Abuja were found and recovered.
The operation which had armed personnel for safety was to recover stolen items and protect unarmed officers conducting the search.
Speaking to journalists after the raid, FCT Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu said 20 manhole covers were recovered. He also restated the ban on scavenging in FCT and said Pantakers Market will remain closed.
“Pantekas are closed. It’s closed,” he said firmly.
He warned that anyone caught scavenging in the area will be arrested and prosecuted.
“The operation is ongoing. Suspects will be profiled and investigated by the Nigerian police and as directed by the minister, they will be prosecuted,” he said.
He urged residents to be vigilant and report any scavenging activity in their area to the authorities.
The operation is part of the government’s efforts to curb illegal activities in the city and address security concerns.
