Katsina State Government has passed a law that allows female civil servants to observe Iddah period if their husbands die. Iddah period is a period of four months and ten days for a wife to mourn her husband in Islam.
According to PUNCH Online, Iddah period is a traditional mourning period for wives in Islam. This new law is sequel to a motion passed by the State House of Assembly and later approved by the executive arm.
Katsina State Head of Civil Service, Falalu Bawale announced this in an interview on Monday. He said a circular has been issued to all state ministries, departments and agencies to allow female officers to observe this period as the case may be.
“We took the matter to the National Council on Establishment so that it can be included in the civil service rules where women who lost their husbands will be allowed to stay and observe the Iddah period after the death of her husband. The council said all states have the right to make a rule that will suit their purpose. So we came back and presented the matter to the state executive council; it was approved and now it can be implemented.”
