The King has just appointed Labour Party leader Keir Starmer as the new Prime Minister during a meeting at Buckingham Palace.
That monumental moment came about after Labour’s landslide victory in recent general elections, spelling an end to 14 years of Conservative rule.

The Palace on Friday July 5, 2024, released a statement, and photograph of King Charles III shaking hands with Starmer .
The statement said: “The King received in audience The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new Administration. Sir Keir accepted His Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.
Transition of Power
Before Sir Keir Starmer took up the post, King Charles III accepted the resignation of Conservative leader Rishi Sunak, who was acting as the Prime Minister. That marked perhaps the most dramatic shift in the UK political landscape, as Labour takes up the mantle of government.
