A 41-year-old Canadian woman Adrienne Munju was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for importing 74 parcels of Canadian Loud a potent synthetic cannabis into Nigeria.
The cannabis weighed 35.20kg.
Munju was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officers on October 3, 2024 at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos during the screening of inbound passengers.
After her arrest Munju confessed that she was recruited online to smuggle the drugs for 10,000 Canadian dollars upon delivery in Lagos.
She said financial struggles to pay for her ongoing Master’s degree in Canada was what led her to accept the offer.
Munju pleaded guilty to both charges before Justice Dehinde Dipeolu.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the prosecution argued that Munju’s offence is contrary to section 20(1)(a) and 19 of NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under section 20(2)(a) of the same law.
After her lawyer’s plea for mercy, the judge sentenced her to six (6) years on the first count and five (5) years on the second. But Munju was given an option to pay N50 million for each count, totaling N100 million.
