The Kano State Independent Electoral Commissio (KANSIEC) has directed all candidates vying for positions in the upcoming local government elections in Kano State to undergo psychiatric tests before October 26 (The Punch).
This was made known by KANSIEC chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, at a press conference in Kano on Friday.
According to Prof. Malumfashi: “We have already done drug tests for chairmanship and councilorship aspirants. Now we will bring in psychiatric doctors to test all candidates.”
He also spoke on a recent court order that barred the commission from charging N10 million for chairmanship candidates and N5 million for councilorship candidates. In compliance with the order, the fees have been reduced to N9 million and N4 million respectively.
Prof. Malumfashi said “Three political parties went to court and got an order that stopped us from charging the previous amount. We are adjusting to the court’s directive by reducing the fees to N9 million for chairmanship and N4 million for councilorship. Some states like Bayelsa and Ebonyi charge as high N20 million.
He said candidates can now buy their forms from the banks as the primary election will end by Saturday and parties will submit their lists to the commission.
APC and other parties have participated in the election, Prof. Malumfashi thanked: “We are glad APC believes in this process. They know we are serious about this in order to run a credible election.
