Aston Villa win dramatic Premier League clash vs Chelsea
Chelsea’s top four hopes suffered another blow on Saturday as they lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. The Blues are now sixth in the table, while Villa are just a point behind.
Trevoh Chalobah was forced off with a back injury inside eight minutes. Despite this, Chelsea started well. Pedro Neto, playing as a striker, was using his pace to get down the right flank. His cross found Enzo Fernández unmarked at the far post and the Argentine midfielder slotted home in the 14th minute.
Villa regrouped at half time and levelled just after the break.
Marcus Rashford, a thorn in Chelsea’s side all game, played a low cutback and Marco Asensio arrived late to smash the ball past Filip Jorgensen.
As the clock ticked down Villa pressed and pressed for the winner. Their pressure paid off in the 89th minute. Rashford’s short corner caught Chelsea cold and Asensio was left unmarked to fire the ball under Jorgensen’s body.
The late goal sealed the win for Unai Emery’s side who had 58% possession and 16 shots to Chelsea’s 9 [Source: Premier League Match Centre].
Chelsea have just one win in their last five league games, Villa are now unbeaten in six at home. Both teams are just a point apart. The race for Europe is going to get a lot more interesting.
