The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State has arrested 75-year-old Nuhu Baba in a raid in Tumbau Village, Gezawa Local Government Area.
The arrest disclosed by the agency’s spokesperson Sadiq Maigatari shows drug related crimes knows no age.
During the operation, NDLEA officers recovered Tramadol, Cannabis Sativa, Diazepam, Exol-5 and Rubber Solution—items notorious for misuse and health hazards.
Investigation revealed that Baba had been into the illicit drug business for two years and uses it as his source of income. This is a wake up call, drug trafficking is not limited to young people but also exploits the vulnerable elderly.
Drug abuse is a major issue in Nigeria with 14.4% of Nigerians aged 15–64 using illicit substances.
Kano being a commercial hub is more at risk due to its location for trafficking.
The arrest of an elderly suspect is a progress and an urgency. It challenges the stereotypes about who is involved in drug crimes while reminding us that we need to bevigilant at all ages.
Kano State Commander Abubakar Idris-Ahmad restated the agency’s commitment to dismantle drug cartel.
“Our operations are continuous but public cooperation is key,” he said.
NDLEA urges residents to report suspicious activities through their hotlines or local offices, adding that community tips often lead to successful interventions.

The agency said parents, religious leaders and community elders should educate youths on drug risks and recognize warning signs such as sudden behavioural change or possession of unexplained substances. Local authorities advise partnering with NGOs and health agencies to support rehabilitation of addicts.
According to the NDLEA, enforcement agencies will do their part but every citizen’s involvement— whether through reporting or grassroots awareness – can save our communities from drug abuse.
