The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has raised alarm over alleged property damage and seizures during a recent by-law enforcement exercise at Navy House, Fatima Building, Pretoria Central.
In a statement issued by Akindele Olunloyo, NUSA’s Publicity Secretary, the union said Nigerian business owners reported an illegal invasion of their shops on January 17, 2025 as part of the “Reclaim Our City” exercise which involved officials from Department of Home Affairs, South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police, City of Tshwane and Gauteng traffic.
NUSA President, Smart Nwobi was informed by the affected business owners and the union swung into action.
The executives of the union visited the site to see things for themselves and talk to the victims directly. The business owners said property was seized in large quantity during the operation.
Officials allegedly took high value items like Brazilian hair extensions, premium hairpieces, TVs, microwaves, salon equipment, cash and drinks from the refrigerators.
The union’s statement also alleged that evidence was deliberately destroyed including the destruction of CCTV cameras and their recording equipment. Officials dismantled the surveillance system and caused damage to the building particularly to the ceiling where the surveillance devices were installed.
The business owners have reported the incident to SAPS Pretoria Central under case number CAS 385/1/2025.
NUSA says it will continue to push for justice, condemn the alleged abuse of power and demand accountability from the officials involved.
This is not the first time Nigerian business owners are facing such challenges in South Africa. What is going on with these joint operations?
