The Nigeria Labor Congress has on Sunday cautioned ECOWAS leaders from sending military troops to Niger Republic in order to restore democracy.
It is believed that if war can be declared against Niger by ECOWAS, the risks involved outweighs the benefits.
The pronouncement was made via a statement signed by Joe Ajure, the Congress president, on Sunday.
Following an extraordinary meeting convened in Abuja, the ECOWAS member countries’ leaders activated a standby force that would be deployed in Niger if need be.
This will enable the West African regional body to establish constitutional democracy and reinstate Mohamed Bazoum once again as the country’s President. He was overthrown by a coup d’état and has been kept under arrest till now.
Nigeria’s president Bola Tinubu who also doubles as Chairman of ECOWAS said every option including use of force as last resort are on table
However,NLC said that this could only put posed President Bazoum’s life and family at risk and create instability across West Africa.
Ajero stressed the importance of ECOWAS leaders evaluating their financial strength in matters concerning going to war.
He also pointed out that there is a risk of Niger being transformed into another battle field for proxy wars. “The end of the conflict may result in an increase in terrorist or insurgent activities,” Ajero warned.
“This kind of war which involves ten against five member states could possibly be the one that will dismantle ECOWAS as it is.”
