The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has confirmed that the recent fire at its Buguma Wellhead 008 was caused by vandals.
According to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the vandals were trying to tamper with the Christmas Tree to steal crude oil.
The fire caused a major damage, the well’s back pressure valve was destroyed.
NNPC Ltd calls it a trend of attacks on oil facilities in the area.
The company said since March 2023, crude oil theft on this asset has been a problem. Criminals have upped their game, using dynamite to destroy installations and get to the hydrocarbons.
NNPC Ltd foryher said that it’s working to put out the fires and stop the financial losses. Added that security agencies are helping to combat vandalism and prevent future occurrences.
Also NNPC Ltd says it’s committed to supporting the communities affected by these destructive activities.
