Mudashiru Obasa is back as the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
He was sworn in on Monday after Mojisola Meranda resigned as speaker, 49 days into her tenure.
Obasa thanked his colleagues and party leaders for his reinstatement. He acknowledged Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, two former governors of Osun and Ogun states respectively, for their support during this period.
The new speaker said this was not an occasion for long speeches but rather to appreciate his colleagues’ efforts.
He said his colleagues had worked hard to keep the assembly running smoothly, emphasizing their collective commitment to serving Lagosians.
Obasa also spoke about unity and mature decision-making in the legislature. His tone was confident and he also sent a clear message of service and protection for Lagosians.
Recent studies have shown that Nigerian legislatures have been adopting internal mechanisms to resolve leadership challenges, hence more stability in governance.
The quick resolution of this leadership crisis shows the assembly can contain internal disputes.
Obasa’s reappointment is seen by many political analysts as a step in the right direction to consolidate the legislative framework and keep the interest of the people at the centre.
