Omoyele Sowore, former African Action Congress presidential candidate, joined the protest in Lagos today. As one of the coordinators, Sowore got to the protest ground, Ikeja Underbridge, by 8:50 a.m.
Speaking to journalists, Sowore described the protest as a step to take Nigeria to the “promised land”. He said the protest is the people’s refusal to celebrate the government’s Independence Day.
Sowore asked if Nigerians have given the government too much chances, citing how former President Muhammadu Buhari misused the extra time given to him.
“This is one of the actions that will take us to the promised land. We did it in August, and today is to reject their independence. We want real independence.”
He said “Have we not been patient enough? We gave them more time, what did Buhari do with it? They bought private jets, new houses, and increased fuel price. They gave us minimum wage and maximum benefits. If they understand the people’s struggles, they should resign.”
Today, protesters are at Ikeja Underbridge, Lagos to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day. The protest is heavily monitored by security forces, police, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
As of now, they are moving along Awolowo Way.
