Rivers State Police Command has arrested a fake police inspector who led an armed robbery gang and four suspects involved in the murder of a Community Development Committee Chairman in January 2024.
According to the police, the impostor Fred Monday was arrested by Anti-Kidnapping Unit around 11:45pm on August 9, 2024 during a operation in Luegbo Community, Khana LGA. Fred who was carrying an AK-47 rifle was arrested while providing cover for cult invitation ceremony.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu made the disclosure while parading the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt on Thursday. He said the operation led to the arrest of five students of Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic who were involved in the cult initiation. The students, Mduni Clement, Prosper Wonyingipreye, Kunle Joseph, Eken Evans and Isaiah Elisha all confessed to being members of Vikings Confraternity and have been charged to court.
The commissioner explained that during the raid Fred Monday was found dressed in police camouflage, posing as an Inspector of Police and armed with an AK-47 rifle, 10 magazines and 29 rounds of live ammunition. He was later found to be Fred Monday, 31 years old from Wiyakara Community, Khana LGA. He confessed that he bought the rifle for N850,000 in 2021 from an accomplice known as Goodluck, aka Boy-J. He also bought additional ammunition and hand grenades from the same accomplice.
Fred told the police that he had been posing as a police officer to help criminals in their operations in various states including Rivers, Delta, Edo and Akwa Ibom. He confessed to being a member of Iceland cult group and was involved in armed robbery while disguising as a tricycle rider during the day to scout for victims. His accomplices are still at large.
In another development, Rivers State Police Command arrested four suspects linked to January 2024 murder of Chief Ndidi Livingstone, a Community Development Committee Chairman in Mgbuoshimini. Chief Livingstone was shot dead in front of his church, Peculiar Faith Ministries in broad daylight and the video of the incident went viral.
After weeks of investigation, the police finally found the cult leader Daddy Chukwu who killed Chief Livingstone. Chukwu was killed in Delta State during a police operation. Further investigation led to the arrest of other members of the gang.
While leading the police to one of their hideouts to recover arms, four of the arrested suspects, John Lucas, Nnamdi Emmanuel, Ogolo Promise and Adebayo Adebayo, tried to escape when other gang members opened fire on the police. In the crossfire, four of the suspects were shot and later confirmed dead at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. The police are still on the trail of other members of the gang and recover more weapons.
