President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has landed in Maiduguri, Borno State to commiserate with the state government and people over the flood that ravaged the area. He returned to Abuja from London last night.
He will assess the damage to homes, hospitals, schools, markets and public infrastructure in Maiduguri. North West is still reeling from the worst flood in 30 years.
In a video on X, Tinubu’s plane landed at Maiduguri International Airport where Governor Zulum and other officials received him.
Flood Devastation
NEMA said the flooding occurred when the Alau Dam, a major water regulating infrastructure, overflowed due to heavy rain. That led to flooding that submerged half of Maiduguri. UNHCR and locals called it the worst flood in 30 years.
Thousands Displaced
NEMA said over 23,000 households were affected by the flood after the dam on the Ngadda River, 20km south of the town burst over the weekend.
Although the water began to recede on Wednesday, 70 per cent of Maiduguri was underwater, with critical sites like the Shehu of Borno’s palace, state secretariat and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital affected.
Infrastructure Wrecked
The flood also destroyed parts of the city, including schools, markets, churches, mosques and homes.
It also killed 80 per cent of the animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo.
Tinubu’s Reaction
Tinubu had earlier condemned the flood and ordered agencies to move fast on rescue. He also ordered residents in flood areas to be evacuated immediately.
