Ralf Rangnick the one-time manager of Manchester United has turned down an offer to manage Bayern Munich.
Rangnick had been with Austria since leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season, guiding them to Euro 2024 qualification and signing a deal until 2026. But Bayern approached him as they prepared for Thomas Tuchel’s exit, and German reports have suggested overtures have continued over recent weeks.
However, Rangnick has rejected those approaches.
Liverpool had previously battled with Bayern for Xabi Alonso’s signature.
But Alonso committed himself to Bayer Leverkusen as they strive to defend their first-ever title next term, so the Bavarians turned back to former coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Nagelsmann, though, also declined that opportunity and remains in charge of Germany as they prepare for a home tournament next summer.
Rangnick is the third in line of this managerial carousel, which has left many fans unhappy. There has been a movement to convince Bayern to stick with Tuchel as they feel he is the better choice.
His time at United couldn’t have been worse – parachuting in after Solskjaer’s departure, while the club were searching for a permanent manager. The season ended in sixth place, with high-profile falling outs such as Cristiano Ronaldo.
At home he’s known as the ‘father of Gegenpressing’. Bayern know that only too well; they could still win the Champions League after playing a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final. But now it’s a different story without Rangnick.
Bayern will certainly have other plans now that Leipzig’s sporting director won’t be joining them next season either.
