Friday, Liz Cheney, a Republican and Donald Trump critic, called the former U.Sm President a “vindictive, cruel” dictator.
This comes after Trump said she would reconsider her position on military intervention if she were threatened.
“This is how dictators undermine free societies,” Cheney, a former Congresswoman and daughter of former VP Dick Cheney, wrote on social media platform X. “Our future shouldn’t be in the hands of a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant.”
Trump made the comments during a fireside chat with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in Arizona. He trashed Cheney’s dad for endorsing Kamala Harris and Liz, calling her “very dumb” and a “radical war hawk.”
He added, “Let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face.”
The response to Trump’s remarks was swift. Ian Sams, a Harris campaign advisor, noted the difference between Trump’s violent talk and Harris’s more measured approach,
“While Trump is talking about putting a Republican in the crosshairs, Harris is talking about putting them in her cabinet.”
Harris herself called out Trump’s language, saying that “verbal rhetoric” like that disqualifies him from being president.
“Anyone who uses that kind of violent rhetoric is clearly unqualified to be president,” she told reporters, referencing Trump’s comment about putting a rifle on Cheney.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former Trump White House aide, called Trump’s comments “unacceptable” and wondered why Republican leaders, many of whom used to work alongside Cheney, haven’t condemned him. “It’s dangerous. It’s escalatory,” she said on CNN.
The Trump campaign responded by calling Cheney a “warmonger” and said she’s quick to send others to war while she doesn’t have to fight.
Cheney was once a rising star in the Republican Party but faced backlash for her criticism of Trump’s refusal to concede the 2020 election. That cost her a leadership position and her seat in Wyoming after Trump endorsed her opponent Harriet Hageman in the 2022 House primary.
In recent weeks, Cheney has been openly backing Harris and has appeared with her to court moderate Republicans. Trump, who has a history of attacking Cheney, said last week she’s a “Muslim-hating warmonger” who wants to invade Muslim-majority countries.
