Senator Abdul Ningi has been suspended for 3 months by the Senate following his claim on BBC Hausa interview that there’s N3.7 trillion discrepancy in the 2024 budget.
Senator Ningi in the interview said the Northern Senators Forum will meet with Senate President Goodwill Akpabio and President Bola Tinubu and that an alternative budget has been ratified “underground”.
In a recent plenary, Senator Adeola Solomon (Ogun West) raised a point of order that the claim infringes on his rights as a senator especially as he was part of the budget approval process in the senate.
Senator Ned supported the motion.
The debate was intense. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC Ondo South) suggested several months suspension for Ningi.
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South) asked for 6 months suspension.
Senator Sani Musa (APC Niger) suggested 3 months suspension for Ningi and that Ningi should write an apology to the Senate.
Akpabio wrapped up the session, “Senator Ningi is hereby suspended for 3 months and disconnected from all activities of the Senate for 3 months” and the senators concurred.
Ningi tried to clarify some of the interview in a Monday press briefing, saying he was misquoted but the Senate went ahead with the suspension.
Before the final ruling, the debate on Ningi’s claim was intense and the Senate was rowdy.
