Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, on Monday evening, proclaimed Wednesday, April 10, to be Eid-Fitri.
The Sultan, who doubles as the President General Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, stated that the decision followed his receipt of reports from National Moon Sighting Committees all over the country which certified that no sighting of the new moon was received.
Prof Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to Sultanate Council issued an official declaration.
The announcement which was made available to newsmen in Sokoto on Monday evening confirmed that council accepted the report and therefore fixed Wednesday April 10th 2024 as Shawwal 1445AH.
“The Sultan’s heartfelt congratulations go to Nigerian Muslim community with prayers for Allah’s guidance and blessings upon them.
“The Sultan also called on Muslim faithfuls for their relentless prayers towards achieving peace, progress and development in the nation and wished them a happy Eid-El-Fitri,” said the statement.
Saudi Arabia had announced earlier that it has not seen crescent moon of Shawwal implying fasting will be extended till Tuesday; PUNCH reports.
The announcement also confirmed that Eid-el-Fitr 2024 will be observed on Wednesday, April 10th to mark the beginning of a new Islamic month based on the lunar calendar.
“Saudi Arabia reported not sighting the crescent of the moon. Consequently, Eid Al Fitr is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th 2024.
