Nigerian songstress Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has won her second Grammy after defeating fellow Nigerians at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday
Tems won the Best African Music Performance for her song “Love Me Jeje” – a category which also have ‘MMS’ by Wizkid & Asake, ‘Tomorrow’ by Yemi Alade, ‘Higher’ by Burna Boy’ and Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ featuring Davido and LoJay.
Tems’ received three nominations at the 67th Grammy Awards – Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best R&B Song, bringing her total to eight
The Best African Music Performance category was first introduced in 2024 and saw South African singer Tyla victorious, winning it for her viral song “Water”. But this year’s nominees were all Nigerians with Chris Brown being the exception.
Asake and Davido have now been nominated for the Grammy Awards twice but yet to win any. LoJay, Yemi Alade, and Rema also bagged their first nominations.
Rema’s “Heis” was nominated in the Best Global Music Album category but suffered defeat to Matt B & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Alkebulan II”. Tems’ album “Born in the Wild” also made it to the same category.
And her song “Burning” loss to SZA’s “Saturn” in the Best R&B Song category.
Wizkid and Burna Boy’, who have won Grammys in the past went home with nothing.
