Defence Minister Bello Matawalle has said President Bola Tinubu asked him to leave because of banditry.
In a statement on Tuesday by Henshaw Ogubike, the ministry’s director of information and public relations, Matawalle said his presence in the region is trouble for bandits and their sponsors.
The minister restated government’s commitment to insecurity, saying political leaders must support the president.
“According to Mr President’s directive, I have returned to Sokoto state to let the people know we will meet all our objectives in the fight against insecurity,” Matawalle said.
“We are with you. We will conquer this bandits and their sponsors who are terrorising our people.”
He urged all stakeholders in the region to work together to achieve the desired outcome. Matawalle also said the federal government will continue to boost the morale of soldiers and security personnel in the battle.
He expressed confidence in the ongoing military operation in the northwest, saying “I believe our troops will continue to succeed in Operation Fansan Yamma as we put more pressure on these criminals.”
In another development, BriefNaija.com reported that Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal accused his predecessorsl of being involved in banditry in the state.
Matawalle rejected the allegation, saying he sworn on the holy Quran to prove his innocence while challenging Lawal to do the same.
