At the Presidential Villa during the festive Democracy Day dinner, President Bola Tinubu jokingly spoke about an earlier incident that had been buzzing on social media.
“As you may have seen online, I had a bit of a moment this morning,” he said. He was referring to when he momentarily lost his balance while climbing onto a military vehicle to inspect the parade.
The president, who is 71 years old, jovially suggested that his slight slip could be mistaken for ‘Buga’ or probably ‘Idobale,’ which is a traditional Yoruba way of paying respect to elders through prostration.
“Some might wonder if I was attempting the buga or simply adjusting my babanriga,” he quipped.
President Tinubu then steered the conversation back on course and with some humor reflected on what this day meant to him in terms of his cultural background.
“Today we are here to honor our democracy and in doing so, I performed my dobale. Remember after all that I am an adherent of Yoruba tradition” he laughed.
