The newly elected Student Union Government (SUG) President of University of Calabar, Blessing Alims has explained why she appointed 50 people into her administration.
As the first female president in the 49 years history of the university, her move has generated a lot of debate on social media with some people comparing it to the perceived inefficiency in Nigeria’s government.
In a statement released by her Press Secretary, Madueke Chinenye, Alims said the appointments are part of her strategy to ensure good governance and cater to the welfare of the over 42,000 students of the university spread across 20 faculties and over 110 departments.
Alims stressed the need for teamwork to manage such a big and diverse institution,
The statement read: “The Students’ Union Government is responsible for the welfare and progress of our entire university community. A single tree does not make a forest, effective governance for over 42,000 students requires teamwork. We need a strong and diverse team to implement our projects.”
She said the appointments are to have representation from each faculty and department so as to mobilize students effectively and govern. According to Alims, this way we can address the unique needs of each segment of the student body.
Also, Alims said the appointments are voluntary and not paid. The positions are to develop the career and sense of responsibility and motivation among the appointees.
Each of the aides went through a thorough screening by the Senate Committee, took Oath of Office and is motivated to bring their skills and creativity to the administration.
Alims also said the selection was merit based, each of the appointee brought valuable expertise to support her administration’s goals. She praised some of the appointees for being national and international award winners for their volunteer work, she said she has confidence in their ability to deliver.
