US Congressman Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, has called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump over his plan to “take over” Gaza.
This comes barely weeks into Trump’s second term and has reignited the debate about America’s role in Middle Eastern conflicts and the morality of its foreign policies.
Trump’s Gaza Plan Causes Outrage
At a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 4, 2025, Trump said the US would take over the Gaza Strip and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East”.
He called Gaza a “hellhole” and said the 2 million Palestinians living there would be relocated to neighboring countries but gave no details on how that would happen.
The plan is being sold as an economic development project but many see it as forced displacement – a practice many equate with ethnic cleansing.
Gaza has been devastated by a 15-month war between Israel and Hamas and has seen over 61,700 fatalities, according to the Gaza Government Media Office.
Infrastructure is in ruins and humanitarian crises loom large.
While the Palestinians look for how to resolve the destruction, Trump’s statement further destabilized the region with Hamas vowing resistance and Middle Eastern countries like the UAE rejecting the plan outright.
Al Green’s Impeachment Push
Congressman Al Green, a long-time Trump critic, called Trump’s Gaza plan a “foul deed” and accused him of ethnic cleansing .
Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Green said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” .
He said such policies harm Palestinians and erode global moral credibility including in America .
Green, who has led multiple impeachment efforts against Trump since 2017, is calling for a grassroots movement to hold the president accountable.
“When the people demand it, it will be done,” he said, but even fellow Democrats admit the move is a long shot in a Republican-controlled Congress .
Despite pushback from both Republicans and Democrats including Senator Lindsey Graham, Trump has some support among conservatives who see it as a “big” solution . But legal experts say forcibly moving Palestinians could be illegal and further isolate the US globally .
For now, Al Green’s impeachment effort is symbolic. But it shows that public pressure can move the agenda.
