Kogi State House of Assembly has demanded the removal of Ola Olukoyede, EFCC Chairman for “persecuting” Yahaya Bello, the former governor of the state.
Yahaya Umar, Omala state constituency representative in the Kogi Assembly claimed Olukoyede is trying to “discredit” Bello who was accused of mismanaging N80.2 billion during his tenure.
Last week, Bello’s media office alleged that EFCC operatives surrounded Kogi government lodge in Abuja to arrest the former governor by force. According to Ohiare Michael, Director of Yahaya Bello media office, they shot during the operation.
This comes after Bello’s media team had earlier reported that Bello honoured the EFCC’s invitation but was later turned back by their officials. EFCC had declared Bello wanted on April 18 after several attempts to arrest him failed.
During Monday’s plenary, Kogi lawmakers condemned the EFCC’s action, describing it as an “unprovoked attack” on Usman Ododo, the current governor. They also accused EFCC of trying to kill Ododo and Bello, saying Bello has been harassed for too long.
The motion was moved by Akus Lawal, representing Ankpa 1 state constituency. Lawal said EFCC want to humiliate and possibly kill Ododo and Bello.
Jacob Olawunmi, Mopamuro state constituency, supported the motion, saying no funds is missing to justify EFCC’s “baseless witch-hunt” of the former governor.
Abu Jibril, Ajaokuta constituency, called on President Bola Tinubu to sack and prosecute Olukoyede immediately. “The chairman has shown incompetence, that’s enough reason for him to be removed,” Jibril said.
