Son of former Nigerian military head of state General Sani Abacha, Sadiq Abacha has praised his late father.
He said his father’s leadership remain relevant despite years of constant attacks.
Sadiq Abacha posted his message on Facebook on Saturday. He said his father was a target of envy and subtle betrayal.
He said history will vindicate his father’s record.
In his words, “The man Abacha- you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down. As a son I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of.”
He ended his message with a Hausa proverb, “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,”, which means “whoever throws a stone in the market.”
This proverb means every action has its consequence.
Sadiq Abacha’s statement came few days after the release of highly anticipated memoir by former military President Ibrahim Babangida.
Babangida’s book has set tongues wagging across the country.
One of the book’s main theme is the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election.
That election, which Babangida admitted was won by MKO Abiola is a defining moment in Nigerian history.
Babangida said he regrets the annulment decision. He said the decision was influenced by forces within his government.
He even alleged that those forces were led by Abacha who acted without his full knowledge.
General Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 to 1998, is one of the most debated figures in Nigeria’s history.
His regime is remembered for introducing measures that stabilised the economy and enhanced security.
But his tenure is also forever linked with allegations of corruption and human rights abuse.
Many scholars and reputable media outlets including the BBC and The Economist have examined the Abacha’s legacy.
These sources continue to offer balanced views that highlight both his achievements and his controversies.
